Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 100 meters north of Williamson Ditch at a point 0.9 miles WSW of junction with East Ditch. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
Slight hummock and hollow micropography.
NOTE: Shallow ponding in hollows during wet periods.
This Pinus taeda-dominated secondary forest with some Acer rubrum and a dense understory of Arundinaria gigantea ssp tecta is fairly typical of stands on mineral soil in the northern portion of the Great Dismal Swamp. This community probably resulted from either suppression of former canebrake (Arundinaria-dominated) communities or repeated cutting of hydrophytic oak forests. The current stand is slated for cutting due to damage from an outbreak of southern pine beetle.
0-5cm - Needle litter->duff
5-8cm - duff grading to mineral soil
8+cm -gray-brown, sandy (clay?) loam/ some clay minerals apparently present.
WATER TABLE AT 8cm.
